Personalized Bnai Mitzvah Study
If getting out my old softball glove is what it takes to pique and maintain a student's interest, then by all means - play ball! My primary interest in working with a student is in the day AFTER his/her being called to the Torah for an aliyah. What are the things that s/he needs to serve as the foundation for a rich and ongoing Jewish identity and ritual life? Based on the students' interests, we answer that question together.
Each session may include:
• Cultivating an "attitude of gratitude"
• Music making, poetry reading and writing
• Jewish storytelling
• Singing and more singing
• Tefillah (prayer) as it relates to the concerns of a pre-teen.
• Torah study, including of course the students' parsha; also Pirkei Avot and Proverbs, the "Twitter feeds of the Rabbis"
• Noshing! (ein kemach, ein Torah, "without flour there is no Torah" - a yummy and intentional reinterpretation of the traditional meaning of the mishna)
• Drawing • Laughing
• Asking questions and comparing our answers to the wealth of Jewish wisdom gifted us
